7 Simple Steps to Care for Your Holiday Poinsettia

The holidays are here, and you will likely be giving and/or receiving a beautiful poinsettia soon. Here are some easy steps to make your gorgeous plants last a long time.

1. Poinsettias are very fragile! Upon receipt, carefully remove any packaging by cutting it off.

2. If there are any broken branches, remove them.

3. Add water if the plant feels dry. Water until the soil feels moist.

4. Keep your plant in bright, indirect sunlight during the day. At night, be sure that it is in complete darkness.

5. Do not allow the plant to completely dry out, also keeping in mind to not over water it.

6. Keep the plant away from drafts and excessive heat.

7. Enjoy your plant for the season!

After the holidays, fertilize the plant if necessary, cut the branches back in May, pinch by mid-August, and keep it in total darkness at night after October 1.

Follow these simple steps, and you will have a plant that you can enjoy over and over again!

Peruvian lily - Description: The main stems of these cut flowers are 2 to 3 feet long and branch into four to six short pedicels; each holding two to four flower buds.
Colors include yellow, apricot, orange, salmon, pink, red, mauve, lavender, purple, cream, white and bi-colors. Alstroemeria typically last one to two weeks.

Bird of paradise -Description: Named for their similarity in shape to the heads of tropical birds, these have multicolored 6-inch flowers held inside green, pointed bracts. Their blooms are bright orange with purple and live one to two weeks.

Calla - Description: Callas are large flowers with thick, waxy petals and solitary 6- to 8-inch flower heads that make excellent cut flowers and blooming plants. Colors include white, yellow, pink, lavender, rose, orange and green. Vase life is seven to 10 days.
Special care: Water frequently and cut stem ends every few days to prevent curling.

Lily -Description: Trumpet-shaped flowers grow to a 6-inch diameter. Stems grow to 3 feet long, carrying four to eight blossoms. Sparse foliage is dark green. Because blooms open at various times, most lilies live one to two weeks. Colors include white, yellow, pink, red and orange; many have a deeper color (freckles) on the inner petal.
Special care: To prevent pollen from staining petals or clothing, remove stamens.
Attention Cat Lovers: According to the ASPCA, lilies are considered to be highly toxic to cats. While the poisonous component has not yet been identified, it is clear that with even ingestions of very small amounts of the plant, severe kidney damage could result. The Society of American Florists recommends keeping lilies out of the reach of cats. It is important to note that lilies do not pose a problem for other pets or humans.

Sunflower - Description: These large field-grown flowers have 2- to 8-inch diameters. Short petals surround a large disc. Petal colors are pale or golden yellow, orange, red or bronze; discs are brown, black, or green. Thick stems support single- and double-flower varieties.
Special care: Keep sunflowers hydrated to help stems support heavy head weight. Place sunflowers in tall containers to provide adequate support for their height.

"Instinct tells us that flowers lift our spirits, but, their effects on seniors are especially profound, if not surprising," said Haviland-Jones.

"Happier people live longer, healthier lives and are more open to change," said Haviland-Jones. "Our research shows that a small dose of nature, like flowers, can do a world of wonder for our well-being as we age."
